(The 1st International Symposium on Regional Sustainable Development)With the global theme: Regional Sustainable Development, University of Merdeka Malang, under its Kantor Urusan Internasional or Office of Internatinal Affairs, conducted an international event: the 1st ISoRSDev or International Symposium on Regional Sustainable Development. This one day symposium was held on Thursday, June 19th, 2014 along with the Gold Anniversary of University of Merdeka Malang.
The aims of International Symposium are to get the conception of sustainable regional development of the various aspects of science and to get the conception of a comprehensive approach to regional development as a new framework of sustainable regional development
A keynote speaker from Curtin University, Western Australia, Prof. Peter Newman AO, presented a paper entitled: “Sustainable Development: Is it Mainstreaming?”. Besides that, there was also a presentation from an honorable guest; Dr. Samsul Ma’arif, S.IP., M.Si., who presented a paper entitled: “Sustainable Development for Disaster.” Mr. Samsul Ma’arif is also known as the Head of BNPB (Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana or Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management).
The event was attended by four distinguish invited speakers from Kanazawa University, Japan (Prof. Zhenjiang Shen); UiTM, Malaysia (Prof. Dr. Normah Hj. Omar); Parahyangan Catholic University, Bandung (Prof. Ir. Robertus Wahyudi Triweko, M.Eng., Ph.D.); and University of Merdeka Malang (Ir. Suriptono, Ph.D.).
For the parallel sessions, the global theme was divided into 3 sub divisions; Social Sustainable Development, Economical Sustainable Development and Environmental Sustainable Development. As for the call paper presenters, they came from some notable universities in East Java; such as UNTAG Surabaya, Brawijaya University Malang and Hang Tuah University Surabaya. It is hoped that this international symposium not only could be a place to share knowledge and experience in higher education, but also as the beginning of a long & fruitful cooperation and friendship among the universities joining it.
